Yoga for Children with Special Needs
Kami's Style and Approach
A certified Yoga for the Special Child®, LLC instructor, Kami works with her students in a one-on-one, private lesson setting, to create an atmosphere that enables concentration and learning. Working within the home of the student, or in a local studio space, Kami builds a program specific to each student that focuses on these five areas:- asanas (body postures)
- pranayama (breathing exercise)
- kriyas (cleansing practices)
- music and sound therapy
- deep relaxation
A testimonial from Phoebe's (pictured above after a session) mom:
"Having a child with special needs brings unexpected challenges and joys" writes Phoebe's mom. "Our daughter, Phoebe, was born at 29 weeks, 2 days, weighing 1 pound 13 ounces. Diagnosed with multiple disabilities including periventricular leukomalasia, cortical visual impairment, and spastic cerebral palsy, Phoebe spent the first three years of her life trying to stay alive.
"Our hope for Phoebe is that she achieves all that she can, and that she develops a sense of self and feels that she is a part of the world. Helping her forge her way through this quagmire is difficult," Phoebe's mom continues. "Standard therapies help with the practical, day-to-day aspects of life, but fall short in helping her develop her inner sense and her ability to integrate herself into the world."
Through her work with Kami, Phoebe has enjoyed the following benefits:
- improved ability to soften her muscles
- improved breathing patterns
- improved ability to maintain her head in an upright position
- improved ability to maintain a sitting posture
- improved self esteem
"Phoebe looks forward forward to practicing with Kami every week," Phoebe's mom continues. "Kami's overall gentle spirit and ability to find the beauty and inner strength in others is evident by the energy and acceptance that she emits. It is difficult to explain the effect that being in her presence has on Phoebe and others. We believe in the work that Kami and Phoebe are doing, and know that it has increased Phoebe's awareness of herself and how she relates in a positive way with the world around her."
